Suicidal feelings and rates (AU)

SUICIDE remains a bigger killer of Australians than road accidents and skin cancer, latest figures show, sparking calls for a major national public awareness campaign.

-Suicide killed 2130 Australians in a year
-Ranks 14 as leading cause of death
-Higher than roads, skin cancer

Suicide prevention researcher Jo Robinson:
“We know that for the most part people hide their suicidal feelings and this prevents them from seeking help, yet effective treatments are available,” Ms Robinson said.

“People also need to know that asking someone who seems vulnerable if they feel suicidal will not put ideas in their heads but will be helpful to them.

“For the most part a vulnerable person will be relieved that someone has finally asked them about their suicidal feelings and this will in effect give them permission to talk about these feelings.”
