THOUSANDS of civil servants could kick up a stink after being warned by bosses not to wear strong perfumes or aftershaves – to avoid costly legal action.
Workers will be told to avoid ‘wearing scented products, including colognes, aftershave lotions, perfumes, deodorants, body/face lotions (and) the use of scented candles, perfume samples from magazines, spray or solid air fresheners’.
The bizarre ban is being enforced in Detroit, Michigan, after city planner Susan McBride was awarded £66,000 under disability discrimination legislation because she claimed she was particularly sensitive to chemical products.
She argued that her colleague not only wore a strong scent but also plugged in a room deodoriser which forced her to go home sick.
This could become a landmark case.
